What size pool heater do i need ?

Swimming pool heaters are sized mainly on the basis of the pool surface area and the difference between the pool and air temperatures. The average air temperature for the coldest month of pool use is used in the calculation. The heating load could also be affected by such things as excessive wind exposure or much cooler night temperatures than daytime air temperatures. In those cases swimming pool heaters with more capacity may be desirable. Another factor which may determine the size of the pool heater you will need is the way you intend to use your pool. There are two common swimming pool heating practices - "constant" temperature maintenance and "intermittent" heating. These are determined by how you want your swimming pool heated - continually or on an intermittent basis. To heat a pool quickly after periods of intermittent shutdown, larger swimming pool heaters are needed. And in colder climates a larger than standard size pool heater also is recommended for "constant" swimming pool water heating. For intermittent water heating however, a larger swimming pool heater actually brings the pool to temperature more quickly.

How much water is in a swimming pool?

To find out how much water fits in your swimming pool is helpful when deciding which swimming pool heater you are going to buy. The pool capacity helps you to calculate the needed swimming pool heating energy. If your pool has not got the stated shape contact your installer or the manufacturer concerning the filling capacity of your swimming pool. Simply use these following formulas for common swimming pool shapes:

For a rectangular swimming pool in meters:

L(ength) x W(idth) x D(epth)
x 1000
= Liters of swimming pool water

For example:

8m x 4m x 1,3m x 1000 =

41600 liters

rectangular swimming pool

For a round swimming pool in meters:

(Diameter x Diameter) x 0,25 x pi x Depth
x 1000
= Liters of swimming pool water

(NOTE: pi stands for the number 3,1416)
For example:

(6m x 6m) x 0,25 x 3,1416 x 1,3m x 1000 =

36757 liters

round swimming pool

For an oval swimming pool in meters:

((Length x Width) – (Width x Width) x (1 - pi/4))
x Depth x 1000
= Liters of swimming pool water
(NOTE: pi stands for the number 3,1416)

For example:

((8m x 4m) – (4m x 4m) x (1 - p/4)) x 1,3m x 1000 =

37136 liters

oval swimming pool

Irregularly shaped swimming pool:

If possible check with the builder or dealer. You may have to calculate the volume based on two separate areas, if the pool is an "L" or "T" shape. For a hexagon or Octagon shape, calculate as a circular pool. Otherwise, use the calculations for either an oval or rectangular pool and substitute an average diameter, width or length.
