Above ground pools

What is an above ground pool?

Above ground swimming pools are often round and oval in design and their frames and liners are offered in many unique colorful patterns. Above ground pools have a visible structural frame with a liner normally made out of vinyl (PVC) that forms the surface of the framing system. Above ground pools have a frame that can be made of galvanized steel or other strong structural materials. The wall or frames can be different heights and are offered in different colors including blue, white and gray. It is a wise option to choose a frame that resists corrosion to ensure it lasts longer and maintains its new look.

Inflatable splasher pools

Inflatable swimming pools are another type of above ground pools. They are offered in many models that are easy to assemble, simple to maintain and affordable. Some inflatable pools are for younger children while others are large enough for the entire family. Most inflatable pools are ideal for sitting or cooling off on a hot day, although you may find some larger and deeper inflatable pools that are suitable for swimming. Some come in a bag that makes transporting and storing them easy. A good inflatable swimming pool equipment is an automatic air pump that will inflate the pool quickly and simply. Some inflatable pools are entirely constructed of vinyl, while other bigger versions have metal framing for extra support. Some of the larger ones may also need a ladder. Some inflatable pool structures come with a system to filter and pump which will help to keep the pool water sanitized. It is important that any inflatable pool owner follow the cleaning instructions to ensure that the water is clean and safe.

What is the difference to in ground pools?

There are essentially two types of garden swimming pools. Those that sit into the ground and those that sits above the ground. There are advantages to both - in ground pools are more permanent and fit into the design of the garden, whereas sometimes above ground pools can be a little obtrusive. However, the advantage of most above ground pools, also called splasher pool, is that they are less permanent. If your space is relatively limited, you might want a pool in the summer but not want to give up the space in the winter. In the case of a heated above ground pool inground pools have mostly a bigger water surface. That’s why they lose more water temperature through evaporation, convection, etc. and they also need a bigger pump. A bigger pump also requires a bigger inground pool heater with a higher water flow rate. Inground pool heaters require a minimum flow rate of 5000 l/min. The Euro Pool Shop will help you find the right swimming pool heater as well as other swimming pool products. Our swimming pool heaters already work with a minimum flow rate of 1000 l/min. The cheap swimming pool heaters are a very small investment for comfortable swimming.

What about the installation?

Some above ground pools can sit on concrete while others are best situated on grass. Some may work best with a protective pad that is placed between the pool and the ground. Many above ground pools not only come with the framed structure and liner but some are offered with a pump, filter and ladder. Eliminating the expense and labor-intensive work of excavation often make above ground pools easier to install. For those considering self-installation, many pools come with relevant installation literature and instructions to assist you in the process. It is important to investigate whether you require a building permit, insurance costs and other issues that you may need if interested in acquiring an above ground pool.

Overall advantages of an above ground pool vs. an in ground pool

  • Inexpensive: Above ground pools are great for those looking for a relatively inexpensive way to provide years of backyard family entertainment.
  • Moveable: If you move, you can take your pool with you, give it to a friend or even sell it. Or you can leave it as a benefit for the next owner of your home.
  • Quick to install: Grab a couple of handy neighbors and you can be hosting a pool party in just a couple of days.
  • Choices: You can choose from aluminium, resin or steel sidings. All three types have various benefits, ranging from rust-resistance to average life-span.
  • Variety: Above-grounds come in several sizes and shapes, and a variety of decorative wall patterns and decking options.
  • Good for Small Lots: If getting a back-hoe into your yard would be next-to-impossible, an above-ground can generally be carried in a kit to your yard and set up.

Above ground pools are typically the least expensive types of swimming pools you can purchase. They are the summer-fun answer for those who don't want to make the larger commitment of an inground pool. They come in several different sizes and shapes with a variety of decking options and they are easy to install. Above ground pools can be made with resin, aluminium or steel siding and they can fit into smaller lots that can’t accommodate in ground structures. Though most people have their pools installed by professionals, above ground structures are made from prefabricated swimming pool kits that can be assembled by an amateur so there’s always the option of doing it yourself. The best part about these structures is that they’re portable. If you move you can take your above ground pool with you and if you get sick of the space it’s taking up in your yard you can sell it or give it to a friend. The main disadvantage of a splasher pool is that it's less durable than other designs, and generally less attractive, when compared to an inground pool. The durability and aesthetic value of above ground pools can be a problem for some people, but for people on a tight budget they are a great option.

What is the appropriate above ground pool heater?

electric swimming pool heaterWith a heated above ground pool you can even enjoy swimming and bathing in the splasher pool at colder times of the year. Above ground pools need smaller pumps than inground pools because of the mostly smaller surface area. The biggest asset of an above ground pool is that its small size does only require a cheap swimming pool heater for swimming pool water heating. But the flow rate of the pump must be big enough to get the electric swimming pool heater started. Therefore pump flow rates of 1000 l/min are normal but for swimming pool heaters a minimum flow rate of 5000 l/min is required. As there are many different above ground pool heaters on the market the investment in the right above ground pool heater should not be larger than in the above ground splasher pool. An above ground pool heating system can be installed in about thirty minutes and can be very economical. The Euro Pool Shop is offering a wide range of electric swimming pool heaters and other swimming pool equipment. From cheap pool heaters to a special titanium swimming pool heater they are a very small investment for comfortable splasher pool swimming. Our swimming pool heaters already work with a minimum flow rate of 1000 l/min. How much swimming pool heating energy do above ground pools need?

Above ground pool heating generally requires about 30 percent more pool heating energy due to increased heat loss through the splasher pool sides. This additional swimming pool water heating requirement can be significantly reduced by installing an R7 rated layer of insulation around the outside of the pool structure. The sunlight’s ultra-violet radiation can damage and reduce the effectiveness of rigid foam insulation, so it is important to ensure the above ground pool insulation is protected. Also use above ground swimming pool covers to reduce the loss of heat energy caused by wind, etc. Look at the tables in heating swimming pool water for more information.
